Warm-Up Film: QUEEN OF AMSTERDAM (Chez Nous)

Chez Nous is a place where everything is possible. It is a refuge for people who the owner of a neighboring restaurant calls “weirdos”. The meager business is supported by a by a small but loyal clientele, who enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, the friendliness of the long-time owner Adje and the nightly drag shows. For the performer Bertie, the barmaid Babette, the lawyer Peter-Jan, and the regulars Gijs and Rachid, it’s more than just a pub – it’s their home. Unfortunately, the future of the pub is far from certain, as it is threatened with closure due to financial looms. A coming-out story, a family reunion and a David vs. Goliath battle on several fronts, health problems, marital disharmony and transience – all this awaits us. And if that’s not enough, there’s a young romance, a turf war and a clash of culture and class in more ways than one, a heist that alludes to “Mission: Impossible,” the Amsterdam CSD and a message of acceptance and understanding.

The film runs Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Kinos im Andreasstadel – more info on the current rules for visiting the cinema and tickets here.

Last Queer Film Night (Queerfilmnacht)

Queer Film Night may have sweetened the time in recent months when you couldn’t curl up in your theater seats. Today it enters its final round with the film “Beyto“.

Beyto is an awesome swimmer and cool dude. But when the young Swiss with Turkish roots falls in love with his attractive coach Mike, his ideal world is shaken up. To preserve tradition and honor, Beyto’s parents see only one way out: their son must marry a woman as soon as possible!

Queerfilmnacht goes online

The Kinos im Andreasstadel usually show at least one queer film every month at the Queerfilmnacht (queer film night). Since the cinemas have to remain closed at the moment, the Queerfilmnacht moves from the movie theater to your screen at home online – with two films per month!

In January, MOFFIE by Oliver Hermanus, which had been shown in the QUEER-Streifen festival program in autumn 2020, will be available at the Queerfilmnacht. The film tells the story of the soldier Nicholas, who serves in the South African army in times of apartheid. The mood is harsh, and his homosexuality must remain secret because any form of weakness is not tolerated and brutally sanctioned. Despite these circumstances, he falls in love with a fellow soldier. If you missed the film at the festival, you can now catch up at home.
Not shown at the 2020 festival, but nevertheless worth seeing is SISTER MY SISTER by Nancy Meckler. In 1933, the sisters Christine and Lea work as servants for a very strict Madame. The mood is turning around as the sisters become more and more distracted from their work, culminating in a morbid climax …
