QUEER-STREIFEN Jury Award (500 €):

The jury, consisting of Jens Holzhäuser, Heinrich Horwitz and Insa Wiese, awards the main prize 2021 to:

BEFORE THE ERUPTION
Roberto Pérez Toledo, Spain, 2020

Statement of the jury:

BEFORE THE ERUPTION is the story of a circle of friends that has been closely connected from childhood to young adulthood. Despite their different ways of life, they maintain their connection, homogeneity and familiarity through regular, joint vacations. This time they reconnect on a volcanic island and find that the landscape of their friendship, through a seemingly unpredictable eruption, has also begun to change or even be recreated. This is how a member of the small group describes the transformation of Em. From the perspective of the reporter and the other friends, Em is not involved as a young man for the first time, but as a person in transition. A volcanic eruption is not understood as destructive, but as a formative and enriching force of nature, which produces new landscapes, as well as changes and enriches existing ones.
The jury pays tribute to the loving and empowering approach to the topic, which gives the audience the opportunity to perceive a person in transition not as an isolated peculiarity, but as a powerful, self-confident and equal part of the whole. For us, the film is an amazing example of how to deal with queer issues in an empowering, encouraging and connecting way without polarizing and problematizing. Roberto Pérez Toledo manages to make the self-confident and empowered position of Em as tangible as that of his friends. This also succeeds because the reporting friend ultimately gives Em sovereignty over the own history of change. In an almost poetic way, the changing person and their environment form a self-evident unity that celebrates its cohesion and its own changeability. Thus, the film succeeds in balancing the sensitivity and uncertainty of coming-out and the promise of a changing, inclusive, colorful and queer world.

The decision in favour of BEFORE THE ERUPTION is also intended to point out that trans persons and their process of transition are still stigmatized to varying degrees and excluded from society. This also applies to the field of art and culture. Yet art in particular has the ability to broaden or change perspectives and to question and influence social norms. For this purpose, it is important that more people are involved and promoted in the art and cultural sector who are queer, disabled or not in compliance with other current social norms. The fact that these groups are exploited and kept away from crucial positions is still a problem and cannot be accepted.
The jury’s prize of 500€ for the best short film of the 10. QUEER-Streifen Film Festival Regensburg goes to ANTES DE LA ERUPCIÓN by Roberto Peréz Toledo, Spain
Congratulations!

23.10.2021: Debut Film Award Ceremony: NICO

The self-confident German-Persian Nico (Sara Fazilat) enjoys the summer with her best friend Rosa (Javeh Asefdjah) and enjoys the lightness of Berlin’s (night) life, until a racist attack tears them out of their carefree everyday life. Traumatized by the crime, the geriatric nurse decides never to be a victim again. She begins to train with karate world champion Andy (Andreas Marquardt). Through martial arts, Nico channels her anger, and yet for the people around her she is no longer the longer the same. More and more she loses the connection to her previous life and the people who were important to her. And even when Nico gets to know Ronny (Sara Klimoska), she no longer knows that the two have met before. Nico and Ronny grow closer until Nico’s memory suddenly returns.

The Max Ophüls Award-winning, Eline Gehring’s first feature sheds light on the situation with an “immediate,
often documentary-like atmosphere” (Saarbrücker Zeitung) the emotional consequences of a completely senseless,
racist act of violence.

NICO will be shown at the Ostentorkino on Saturday, October 23, at 20 pm. There will be a champagne reception at 7:30 pm. More infos and tickets at the Ostentorkino website.

Cinematographer Francy Fabritz will be at the screening and answer your questions at a Q&A afterwards.

21.10.2021: Opening of the festival with KAPANA

“You don’t talk much,” George (Adriano Visagie) addresses the handsome stranger in the bar, who gives him meaningful looks. “And you talk too much,” counters Simeon (Simon Hanga). For him, the encounter is a one-time thing, no one should know about it. The very next day, they meet again at a Kapana stand (Kapana is a Namibian grilled meat specialty) – in public, where Simeon can’t ignore George so easily. Because to make matters worse, the latter has not forgotten Simeon so easily …

Warm-Up Film: QUEEN OF AMSTERDAM (Chez Nous)

Chez Nous is a place where everything is possible. It is a refuge for people who the owner of a neighboring restaurant calls “weirdos”. The meager business is supported by a by a small but loyal clientele, who enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, the friendliness of the long-time owner Adje and the nightly drag shows. For the performer Bertie, the barmaid Babette, the lawyer Peter-Jan, and the regulars Gijs and Rachid, it’s more than just a pub – it’s their home. Unfortunately, the future of the pub is far from certain, as it is threatened with closure due to financial looms. A coming-out story, a family reunion and a David vs. Goliath battle on several fronts, health problems, marital disharmony and transience – all this awaits us. And if that’s not enough, there’s a young romance, a turf war and a clash of culture and class in more ways than one, a heist that alludes to “Mission: Impossible,” the Amsterdam CSD and a message of acceptance and understanding.

The film runs Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Kinos im Andreasstadel – more info on the current rules for visiting the cinema and tickets here.
